Area Calculator

Calculate area for common 2D shapes with dynamic fields, formulas, and clean unit-based results.

Select a shape and enter dimensions to calculate area.

How to Use

Choose a shape and unit and enter positive dimensions in that same unit. For triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids, height is perpendicular to the base, not the sloping side. For an ellipse, enter the major and minor radii: half the full axis lengths.

Formula and interpretation

Rectangle: length × width. Square: side². Triangle: base × perpendicular height / 2. Circle: π × radius². Parallelogram: base × perpendicular height. Trapezoid: (parallel base 1 + parallel base 2) × perpendicular height / 2. Ellipse: π × major radius × minor radius. Results use squared units such as cm² or m²; selecting a unit labels the dimensions and result, rather than converting mixed-unit inputs.

Example

A 10 cm × 5 cm rectangle has area 50 cm². A triangle with base 4 m and perpendicular height 5 m has area 10 m². A circle with radius 3 cm has area 9π, approximately 28.27 cm². An ellipse with radii 4 cm and 2 cm has area 8π, approximately 25.13 cm².

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter a diameter instead of a radius?

For a circle, divide the diameter by 2 first. For an ellipse, divide each full axis length by 2.

How do I handle different units?

Convert all lengths to one unit before calculating. A square meter equals 10,000 square centimeters because the length conversion factor is squared.

Does area include perimeter or volume?

No. Area measures a two-dimensional surface. Use Volume Calculator for three-dimensional space.
